Wedding Speech Tips

The Beginning

Remember who your audience are! You’re about to deliver an amazing speech to a wonderful room of people. You’ve all been bought together in one way or another by the couple. Concentrate on how you want the audience to feel – this will help you speak from the heart. This will instantly capture your audience. You can begin your wedding speech with a joke, statement, and question or by a simply introducing yourself. Once those first few sentences flow out of your mouth, the rest will just follow!

The Middle
Pick three key things to talk about! Whether you’re the groom delivering your speech on behalf of the newlyweds, the father of the bride or the maid of honour, you don’t want to waffle on for half an hour sharing all the memories you have – this is what the rest of the day of the day has been for. Pick topics such as when the couple met, when they were young or the first time you met their partner. This is a great way to capture the audience and ensure your wedding speech is entertaining, sentimental and captivating.

The End
Now this is where we round it off with a toast! By now, you’re ready to wrap your speech up and get back to the celebrations. This is the time to say your thanks to guests for coming, the bridal party for all their hard work, the guests for attending and making such a great night and the list can go on. All that is left to do if finish it off with a toast – you can give your best wishes to the couple, to your husband or wife and wishing them all the best for their future together!

Important tips to remember:

  • This is a toast, not a roast! While some jokes can be funny, you’re not there to completely embarrass the bride or groom – keep the jokes light and engaging.
  • Practise makes perfect! As I’m sure we have all been told, the key to nailing your wedding speech is practise.
  • Don’t get too happy at cocktail hour! Yes, it happens. Although some liquid courage can help to calm the nerves, you don’t want to be up there with slurred speech and loose lips!
  • Write it how you’d speak it! Our mannerisms are all very different and reading something that does not sound like it’s come from you can be very obvious. Be genuine in your words and you’ll be genuine in your delivery.
  • Don’t forget…
