Garden Wedding Ideas
Garden wedding ideas is one of our favourite topics! Hosting your wedding outdoors is super tempting and we understand why. There’s simply no better backdrop than the great outdoors.
Let’s face it, a function room is a function room in many cases. That’s why considering some garden wedding ideas is a great way to go. There’s literally endless outdoor locations that make a postcard-perfect backdrop for your ceremony and reception. It also goes without saying the exact same location can have a completely different effect just depending on your wedding season.
Today on the blog we’re going to break down some of the garden wedding ideas that can make your day successful or stressful. Without a doubt we’re shooting for the former!
Weather
Garden wedding ideas live or die by the weather. It sounds dramatic but it’s true! Expect to become a tad obsessed by the weather if you plan an outdoor wedding. Choosing the right season for your area is essential. If it monsoons every May, you might want to choose the opposite end of the calendar! Spring and Autumn are obvious choices due to the balmy weather. You’re sure to cut costs by not having to worry whether your guests will be too hot or too cold.
The most important of garden wedding ideas: Plan B!
Plan B. Don’t plan a garden wedding without one! The easiest and most flexible idea is to choose a venue location with an indoors option. While your first preference will always be outdoors, it’s an easy switch at the last minute if the weather doesn’t play nice. The next best option is to have a marquee on standby should the clouds get heavy at crunch time.
Lighting
One of our favourite features and garden wedding ideas has to be lighting options. Is there anything better than strung twinkle lights? They provide a soft romantic and vintage glow. The addition of candles on tables and dotted around the reception are gorgeous too. Just remember the glass candle lanterns to ensure they don’t blow out with the first puff of wind!
Feeling hot, hot, hot…
Now matter how well you plan your garden wedding ideas for every situation, there’s bound to be extremes. If your summer wedding may turn hot, purchase some cheap individual battery fans. If it’s in winter, fold a throw rug over guest chairs. Even if they don’t end up being used, the details show you care!
Will your ceremony be at the same location?
Remember to set up different zones if your ceremony will be held at the same location. For example, your ceremony may be held down at the lake and then your reception on the lawn. It certainly helps if these zones are separate. Suppliers will need time and space to set up, some of which may still be being prepared during your ceremony. It’s easiest if there’s some room to breathe between the two zones. It also means a much more impactful reveal of the reception space to your guests.
Grass makes a great dance floor
“Dancing barefoot on the grass” isn’t just a great Ed Sheeran lyric! A lawn dancefloor can be truly beautiful. Just put in some prior planning like making sure the area is well fertilised and watered in the weeks leading up to your day. A green ant treatment is also recommended. -there’s nothing worse than a crying flower girl!
Use nature for theming and to help the budget
You’ll be amazed what gorgeous greenery you can find, with the required permissions of course. Beautiful greenery and blooms that match your surroundings can be simply breathtaking. Bottlebrush, Banksia and gum leaves may be all your wedding table needs! Not to mention they will provide your guests with a gorgeous natural scent. Just remember to check for creepy crawlies and “re-home” any first!
Don’t forget power
Speak to your suppliers about what they will need for your outdoor location. The vast majority will need power. One of the most common things we find at outdoor weddings is that they are underpowered. Catering and lighting all draw large amounts of power. Too many items on one circuit can cause a surge and electrical equipment (such as a photo booth!) don’t like that much! Hire a professional to look after your power requirements. Loss of power on the night can really bring down the mood and be frustrating if you need to wait for it to be fixed.
Add a little sparkle
Finally, if you’re getting married outdoors, why not end the night with a sparkle…or even a bang! Sparklers or even splashing out on some fireworks create a magical end to your night. Fireworks are one of our favourite garden wedding ideas, hands down!
